marble boat

These are some pictures of my boat. It held 26 marbles and was still floating.  It started to sink at 27 marbles.  We watched a video and copied how to make it. Have you made one before?

  1. Hi Olivia
I am glad you took up the challenge. Twenty six marbles is more that what I imaged the boat would hold before it sunk. How many marbles did you think your boat would hold? Was it more or less than twenty six?
Did you make your boat from paper? What would happen I wonder if you made your boat from baking paper? Would it hold more marbles, or less before it sank? I wonder if you can think of any other improvements on your design that would possibly allow the boat to hold more marbles.
You seem to have made more than one boat, did you let Caden have a go too?

    1. Hi Mrs Hickford
When I started I thought it was only going to hold 10 marbles.I was surprised that it held more than 10 marbles.Mum and I made boats from paper.Mums boat only held 19 marbles.
      Have you made one?

    2. Hi Olivia
Yes, I have made a paper boat like yours. I managed to get twenty four marbles in my boat before it sank. I wonder why some people can put more marbles in than others? If you weighed one marble you could work out how much more weight you could get in your boat than your mother got in hers, and how much weight in total you got in your boat.

I wonder if the type of paper you use makes any difference to how many marbles your boat can carry? Do you think if you used thicker paper you could put in more marbles? What if you used laminated paper?

Does it make a difference to the number of marbles you can put in if you put them on one side first or place them carefully on alternately around the boat? Sometimes when you do a challenge such as this you end up asking more questions when you think you have an answer.

Maybe we should investigate some of these questions when we get back to school.

  2. Kia ora Olivia,
What a fantastic idea it was to find out how many marbles your boat could hold! Making paper boats is such a fun activity to do in order to pass some time, and it is something I can remember doing quite a bit when I was younger.
My next door neighbours had a large dam which we would often float our home-made ships across. Sometimes we would use items such as milk bottles and plastic containers to build our boats, and other times we would use paper and see how long they would last in the water.
I never thought to measure how much weight they could hold, so ka pai for your ingenuity!
Before filling your boat with marbles, did you have any predictions as to how many marbles your boat would hold?
Were there any special techniques you used in order to make the paper stronger?
How long did the boat float for before the paper started to dissolve?
It would be awesome if you could reply to this comment and let me know!
Perhaps you could find out the weight of each marble and calculate how much weight your boat could hold before sinking. This would be a fantastic way to end your experiment!
    Keep up the great work!

  3. Hi Olivia, That looks cool. I made the boat and then couldn't find any marbles in our house!! If you still lived next door you could have rolled some over to me😁. Did Caden make one as well? How many marbles did his hold? Mum's one went good, I bet she was pleased. Chris

    1. Hi Chris
I really liked making the paper boat. My favourite part was pulling the paper into the shape of the boat at the end of folding.

  4. What a great idea Olivia. Did your teacher set this challenge or was it something you just wanted to try? I cannot believe that you could put that many marbles in it and it did not sink. Did you use thick or thin paper? Did you think the boat would hold that many marbles?

  5. Hi Naomi
Mrs Hickford set the challenge for us. We used normal A4 paper. I didn't know it would hold that many marbles. I thought it would only hold 10
